To ensure a safe and fun outing, our guides provide a
safety overview before each trip departs. If you have any special needs,
please tell us in advance.
- REMEMBER: SAFETY FIRST
- Have paddlers sign the waiver
- Find out the experience level of the paddlers. The two least
experienced paddlers will be in the guide boats.
- Never get ahead of the lead guide or behind the sweep guide. All
paddlers should stay between the two guides.
- Make sure paddlers are wearing appropriate clothes, shoes, etc.
Sunscreen is a good idea as well as a water bottle.
- Go over maneuvers: (e.g. paddling forward, ferries, eddy turns, etc.)
See sheet in binder. Stress the need for communication.
- Wearing your lifejacket (PFD) is required.
 | Although PFD's are sold in sizes such as small, medium and large,
the correct size is always dependent on the wearer's weight. Always
check the PFD's label for size/weight limits and specifications. |
Universal River Signals:
 | STOP: Horizontal bar with the paddle above your head. It means there
is a potential hazard ahead. Everyone should stop and wait for the "all
clear" signal before proceeding. |
 | HELP/EMERGENCY: Wave your paddle back and forth in a vertical
position. This means to assist the paddler(s) immediately. |
 | ALL CLEAR: Form a vertical bar with your paddle above your head.
This means to proceed down the center (you can also lower the paddle by
45-degrees toward the side of the river with the preferred route. |
In case of emergency or if a boat/barge is near we will ALWAYS exit
RIVER RIGHT.Self-Rescue and Assisted-Rescues (what to do in case of
emergency/accident) - DO NOT PANIC!
If you tip over, check for your partner, get to the upstream end of
the craft and swim to the safest shore.
Leave the boat ONLY if it will improve your personal safety. We will
come to your aid and throw a rope bag to you and/or assist you in getting
back into your craft. |
